If you’ve noticed there are more icons on your desktop than programs you’ve installed on your computer, chances are, you’ve been infected with spyware, adware    or other unwanted programs. More often than not, these programs self install when you visit certain Web sites, click “yes” when a pop-up window asks you to install freeware or through file swapping. You can protect your computer against unwanted downloads by using an anti-spyware program like Spy Sweeper. Spy Sweeper searches for and eliminates known spies, including those that place icons on your desktop. Be sure to update your definitions frequently for the best protection available.

SPYWARE NEWS

The Newest Spyware Threat: Rootkits

Rootkits have been in the news a lot lately, but what exactly are they?

A rootkit is a set of software tools frequently used by a malicious user after they gain access to a computer system. Rootkits conceal running processes, files or system data, which helps an intruder maintain access to a PC without the user's knowledge. Rootkits may hide the presence of spyware and other programs that monitor your online usage and keystrokes. Rootkits can also conceal backdoors that a malicious user may use to gain unrestricted access to your system.

In other words, rootkits are capable of making your operating system more vulnerable to malicious code, like spyware programs, that may hide additional files on an infected computer.

Spy Sweeper detects and removes certain applications that disguise files, including rootkits. Webroot feels that using an application to obfuscate software may subject a user's PC to malicious attack. If our threat research team determines that the rootkit presents a security threat to a user, we will detect and remove it.

We are currently testing software in response to this latest threat.

Tips & Tricks to keep you running

Protect your computer from risks such as the W32.Zotob.E and W32.Esbot.A worms today.

Risk Level: Category 3 - Moderate - Outbreak Type: Worms

Wed like to draw your attention to a malicious worm identified as Zotob, which is currently circulating on the Internet. The worm is a malicious attack which exploits the Windows Plug and Play vulnerability addressed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039 on August 9, 2005. Our initial investigation has revealed that the worm attacks Windows 2000-based systems. You can protect against this worm by installing the security updates provided by the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039 immediately.

On a more positive note - we have some new security events posted on our UK TechNet web site but you may notice not as many as before. This is because we are consciously trying to cover the security message in with the other activities we do. So for instance if we are talking about Exchange Server we should have a session on Securing an Exchange environment. We will still do stand alone security events but I hope you find this move a positive step in trying to meet your needs more effectively. However, we have highlighted a whole series of more formal training here. As ever, let me know if you have any feedback

   Protection Update.

As of August 16, 2005, protection updates are available via Live Update or the Security Response Website. For more information on Symantec Products containing the LiveUpdate feature, click here.

   How does it affect me?

W32.Zotob.E
W32.Zotob.E is a worm that opens a back door and exploits the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039) on TCP port 445. W32.Zotob.E can run on, but not infect, computers running Windows 95/98/Me/NT4/XP. Although computers running these operating systems cannot be infected, they can still be used to infect vulnerable computers that they can connect to.

W32.Esbot.A
W32.Esbot.A is a worm that spreads by exploiting the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-039).
Note: Virus definitions were posted on August 15th for this threat.

   Next Steps?

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

1.Turn off and remove unneeded services.
2. Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services
3. Apply any security updates in trusted Security Bulletins, or on vendor Web sites.
4. Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers.

Malware Remover
If you spend any time online at all, and especially if you download files from the internet, SpyWare is something you really have to worry about. For those not familiar with these unsavoury little characters, they really are the bane of all 'Net users lives; the chances are there is some form of spyware lurking on your PC right now.

In a nutshell, they are little files, often remotely executable programs, that enter your system on the back of files you download or internet cookies picked up from sites you visit. Some cause real threat to your privacy as they steal information from your drive, and upload it to a server where this information will get sold, or used without your knowledge, and others will cause pop-up ads and some will hijack your browser to guide you to the sites they want you to visit

Process Information

msmsgs - msmsgs.exe (51 Infected Registry Items Found!)

Process File: msmsgs or msmsgs.exe
Process Name: MSN Messenger

Description:
msmsgs.exe is the main process relating to the MSN Messenger Internet chat tool installed by default on most Windows computers. A tray bar is also installed alongside this process for easy access to its features which include Internet chat, file sharing and audio/video conferencing. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

Note: msmsgs.exe is a process which is registered as the W32.Alcarys.B@mm worm. This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open its hostile attachment. The worm has it’s own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. It is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately. Please see additional details regarding this process

use MSN Messenger to share files. How can I be sure that they don’t contain a virus?
You can configure MSN Messenger to analyse received files with Norton AntiVirus. Open the software’s "Tools" and "Options" menus and in the "Messages" tab, check the "Detect file viruses” box. In the "Browse" menu, find Norton AntiVirus and click on OK. Your antivirus will now analyse all downloaded files.

Anti-Spyware FREE Software

ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware 6.1.737
Entering the antispyware fray, ZoneAlarm reworks its popular firewall application with tools for removing and preventing malicious Internet-borne threats.

Internet users are increasingly aware of its dangers
According to a study carried out by Jupiter Research, 32% of Internet users use anti-spyware software. Although those taking part in the study stated that their main reason for doing so was to delete cookies, a significant number also said that they were very concerned about protecting themselves against spyware. The study proves that the information campaign conducted by software publishers and the media has begun to bear fruit: Internet users are now aware of the damage that spywares cause, as demonstrated by the fact that a third of them are already taking the necessary precautions. In order to confront this widespread problem – a Symantec study has shown that it takes only one hour of surfing the Net for more than 850 suspicious programs to install themselves on a computer – specialised software is therefore indispensable.

Clean up your PC!

If you've been using your computer for more than six months, it's safe to say that you don't need all the files and email messages stored there. What's more, these unnecessary files will slow down your computer and make it more difficult for you to find the information you need.

Some files identified by Spy Sweeper as spyware may be essential for operation of desirable applications. To protect you from disabling such applications, Spy Sweeper initially quarantines all spyware files and traces. This gives you the option to restore these files in the event you decide to keep them on your system. You can set Spy Sweeper to permanently bypass removal of these files on future sweeps by selecting the Options tab, then the Always Keep icon. In this mode, Spy Sweeper will display all quarantined files. Simply check the box next to the file you wish to keep.

REGISTRY NEWS

SPYWARE, DOMAIN AND INTERNET NEWS

Important article for all UN Web Hosting Customers. A Web based worm that identifies potential victims by using search engines is spreading

among online bulletin boards targeting vulnerable versions of the program phpBB and it's variations (IPB, vB etc.).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the registry and how can I modify it?
The registry contains critical system information – such as start-up procedures or the data required to run programs – and must not be modified by anyone other than an expert user. It can be accessed by going to the “Run” menu in Windows and typing "regedit". One of the benefits of using the registry editor is that you can see a list of the software programmed to be launched each time the computer is turned on. Some software do so legitimately, but for others, such as certain viruses or spywares, it’s a means of increasing their nuisance factor.
Often they modify these registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\RunHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run
But be careful not to delete a key without knowing its function. Do not use the registry editor unless you know what line needs to be modified.
